Sinatra - with Matt Dusk
The question here just might beg: why sing Sinatra when Sinatra sang Sinatra and we can just listen to the original?
And the answer is: Matt Dusk.
In an era when many things old are new again and mid-century modern is all the rage, Matt Dusk brings a new millennium spin to an album full of gin-soaked gems from a bygone age. The swagger, the style and the spirit (or would that be the spirits?) are all here but tinged with a modern sensibility that brings new life to these musical masterpieces.
"Summer Wind" balances a beautiful big band bonanza with Matt's brilliantly chill delivery. The spin on "I Only Have Eyes For You" is uptempo groove combined with Rat-Pack strut. And who doesn't love "I've Got You Under My Skin"? It's just one of those classics that never gets old or boring. Matt delivers it with pure unadulterated integrity.
And that is what I love the most about this record. So may artists over so many years have taken on the Great American Songbook and tried to "jazz it up" or "modernize" it or "make the songs hip" or just plain change them for the worse. Matt does not do anything like that with "Sinatra". His approach is pure reverence. From "Lady is a Tramp" to "Fly Me To the Moon" to ultimately "My Way", Matt Dusk reminds us with every note why Sinatra was THE voice of his era. The fact that Mr. Dusk can take this collection on and win BIG with it only attests to his unique and seemingly effortless talent.
We all need an old-school Vegas crooner in our lives and for me, that crooner is Matt Dusk.
Matt brings his "Sinatra" show to Vancouver's Vogue Theatre on November 9. I'm absolutely sure that with perfect songs to match his perfect voice, Matt Dusk will bring Sinatra to life in a spectacular Broadway-style show. Start spreading the news Van City - for one night only "Sin City" is coming to town.
