CHRIS STANDRINGAs We Think

When author James Allen released his book As a Man Thinketh back in 1903, he described his literary work as, according to Wikipedia, "[dealing] with the power of thought, and particularly with the use and application of thought to happy and beautiful issues." Little did Allen know that a future musician growing up in the UK would get his hands on the book as a youth and allow it to inspire him to craft his own work. In fact, the title of the 2024 release by venerable guitarist Chris Standring is derived from the book title, and optimism and positivity are foundational elements of this latest project.

I've written reviews on numerous Standring albums over the years, and I can say with unequivocal assurance that each release continues his signature pattern of soulful melodies and stylish, sophisticated grooves in a class of its own. So cue this latest 11-song release and immerse yourself in that longstanding—or should I say, long-Standring—tradition of delivering irresistible and infectious grooves with the assistance of some top-name contributors, namely percussionist Lenny Castro and pianist Terry Disley.

Standring kicked off the celebration of As We Think with the hand-clapping and brass-backed massive chart hit "Alphabet Soup," and has since followed that up with the newest charting single "Good Gracious"—fast-flowing funk highlighted by Rodney Lee's Rhodes solo.

Reminiscent of the throwback funk sound of the '80s is "Chocolate Shake," where Standring goes slightly heavier on the bass and percussion, with a degree of soulful psychedelia and the addition of talkbox technology that he seems to be having fun playing with.

Standring changes tempos numerous times with songs like "Come Closer," "This Life," and "Bedtime Story." While on the slower side with these tracks, they showcase the guitarist's versatility in moods and themes, never losing engagement with the listener.

Standring married for the first time last year, and this collection of songs reflects that hopeful mindset and marital bliss. As he notes on the album in a message to fans: "And so it might be no surprise to hear that I recently got married, an influence that emanates loudly from these recordings." He adds, "This album is clearly upbeat, hopeful, with a positive spin that perhaps brings a smile to the listener's face."

Indeed, it does—and to the listener's ears and soul as well.
