Mindi Abair - I Can't Wait For Christmas
What do you get when you combine three of my favourite things—sax, Christmas, and Mindi Abair? You get a grooving, soulful, fun, and festive holiday collection, just perfect for this December. And, I'm sure, many Decembers to come. It is so enthusiastically evident that Mindi loves this special season, and every track absolutely glistens with joyous spirit.
The title track, "I Can't Wait For Christmas," is a rollicking ode to the simple pleasures of the season (including wine—one of Mindi's passions!). Her sweetly saxy take on "What Christmas Means to Me" sets a very merry tone. The Charlie Brown classic "Christmas Time Is Here" is luminous and melancholy at the same time, and the timeless "Christmas Song" is truly one of the best instrumental versions I've ever heard—pensive, moody, and marvelous.
Other favourites include "Silent Night," "Frosty," and "I'll Be Home For Christmas," where Mindi's voice shines so richly one wonders why she isn't a powerhouse vocal star as well as a sax goddess (I have personally wondered this ever since she sang "Stars"). And then there is Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Acoustic, deep, simple, and complex, all at the same time. Exquisite.
I love that she wraps up the collection with "Auld Lang Syne." There is nothing corny or kitschy about her inspired take. Just love, hope, and, as always, soul.
For most of the past 21 years, Mindi has headlined her own holiday tour, and this new record once again establishes her undisputed role—Queen of Cool Vibe Christmas. I Can't Wait For Christmas is a warmly welcome addition to my December playlist and the perfect seasonal soundtrack for a smooth and jazzy jubilee!
